Agnes Mug by Michelle Blade
We're excited to introduce this new collaboration with our friend, artist and ceramicist Michelle Blade.
Since our first collaboration with Michelle, she moved to Los Angeles from Portland, OR, where we featured her home studio on our Morning Rituals journal.
The new mug was inspired by and named after artist Agnes Martin. Here's Michelle on her inspiration behind this piece:
My inspiration for this new mug is inspired by the life and practice of Agnes Martin. Agnes Martin fervently believed in the positive underlying universal emotions that her art could unlock. Many of these emotions were based on her response to nature. Her iconic grid paintings are meant to evoke the calmness that a river or mountainside hike can inspire.I love this sentiment and strive to tap into a similar flow with my work. I see harmony between art making and the natural world and aim to bring this into the pieces I make. For the Agnes Mug I've glazed each hand built mug in a bone matte glaze, hand-painted lines in a caramel grid and dotted each square in a lapis blue. Each mug is unique in itself and it is my hope that it brings a bit of tranquility into your daily life.
We love how smooth, soft and round the edges of this mug are, and the handle is perfect for gripping or sliding a finger through. The mugs fit between 11-13 ounces of coffee in them — a perfect amount for your morning cup!
