Travel Guide | Oaxaca

Oaxaca is a brilliant place, with a depth & history that may surprise those unfamiliar. The central valley of present-day Oaxaca rivals Mesopotamia as an epicenter of early human development — most notably in food and art. Corn (maíz) was invented here. The region is notable for the diversity and vibrancy of its indigenous cultures, and while spread out across the various geographic regions of the state, elements of their unique cultural contributions reveal themselves in the capital city: Oaxaca de Juárez.

We began visiting Oaxaca prior to sourcing coffee from here. While the area and villages around the city offer lots to explore in the way of markets and makers, we’ve enjoyed walking and exploring the city itself, and we’ve built this guide based primarily on our favorite finds therein. You’ll find it’s incredibly easy to get around, should you learn about a village you want to visit. Just hail the nearest taxi and they’ll not only bring you wherever you want to go, they’ll likely share a lot of knowledge about other places you can visit.

Upon establishing a coffee supply chain here, we’ve been fortunate to visit other areas of the state of Oaxaca, including its mountains and beaches. There’s much to discover and experience. But if it’s your first visit, you can’t go wrong starting in the city. If you’re like us, you’ll find yourself yearning to come back for more.

As always, our guides are free to download.

ABOUT THE GUIDES

Travel has been a huge factor in developing our passion for coffee. Since we met, finding and visiting coffee shops has always been a highlight of our travels. Especially when on short trips, stopping into a roaster is a great way to get a taste of the local culture and pick up some tips for other good spots to visit.

Our guides are a way for us to share places we've visited and enjoyed. Rather than comprehensive, they're intended to provide little glimpses into larger environments that hold any number of possibilities and will appeal to you in myriad ways, should you make the trip!

Be sure to check out our guides for JapanBarcelonaPortugal, and New York, too!

We hope to inspire, add a few spots to your itinerary, and make sure no trip goes without delicious coffee :)
